The East Point restaurant BGR Grille recently changed its name to American Burger, but its latest routine inspection under the new name didn’t go so well and the health score dropped to a 50/U.

A food prep employee failed to properly wash hands after changing tasks such as handling the mail and wiping down tables in the seating area.

The inspector observed a live bug near the three-compartment sink, and when asked to see the most recent pest control service report, the restaurant couldn’t provide one. The inspector said there were outer openings in the facility that should be secured.

American Burger, 1603 White Way, Atlanta, had previous scores of 96/A and 76/C. The inspector said the restaurant never changed its food permit to reflect the new name and must fill out the appropriate papers and pay a fee.

Among other code violations, none of the food containers inside a reach-in cooler had date markings. And some drinks were out of date, including Powerade, which expired in October.

Raw eggs were improperly stored on the top shelf of the reach-in cooler, the inspector said.

Some potentially hazardous cold foods were not at safe temperatures. Sliced tomatoes and a tomato and cucumber mix were both too warm.

The reach-in cooler had a leak — containers were being used to catch the water run-off — and its air temperature was too high, the inspector said. There was also a leak at the three-compartment sink.

American Burger will be re-inspected.
