Athens should be united in one state Senate district, not split up so that the heavily Democratic area is represented by two Republicans, residents told state lawmakers Monday.
The joint House and Senate committee in charge of drawing new political district maps after the 2010 census held the first of 12 public hearings across the state Monday at Seney-Stovall Chapel.
Many who spoke Monday told committee members that they felt disenfranchised when the Legislature split Clarke County between two Senate districts during a mid-decade redistricting in 2006.
“This is gerrymandering at its worst,” said Larry Dendy, who lives near Winterville. Other communities around Georgia also want to be kept whole.
