Georgians kept their cool in August 1945 with a little help from the local iceman. In this Flashback Fotos gallery, Atlanta Journal and Constitution photographer Rita McGill profiles a summery day in the life of Athens, Ga., iceman Thomas Weller. Under the watchful eye of a curious lad, Weller chizzles away a block of ice for delivery on his route...

Talk about your cool customers! These Athens-area folks were happy to see Weller arrive at their doorstep during the hot August day with his precious (and heat-sensitive) cargo. Even Fido is eager to get some summertime relief, seeing as how he's dealing with a fairly hefty coat.

Weller helps a trio of youngsters on his route beat the heat with some small pieces of ice. No, he's not exactly the ice cream man but these kids know a good deal when they see it. We wondered if the days of the iceman were long gone. They aren't. In the Atlanta area, a number of companies still offer home ice delivery, though the modern business is geared towards supplying parties and gatherings. So, unfortunately, you may find yourself cooling your heels if you're still depending on an old-school icebox for refrigeration.
