Cobb County manager David Hankerson on Tuesday gave commissioners an update on the $622 million Atlanta Braves stadium project planned for the Cumberland Mall area.
The authorization hearing for the county’s bond issuance is scheduled for July 7, at 1:30 p.m. in front of Cobb Superior Court Judge LaTain Kell.
The bond authorization hearing is a necessary step before the county can take on debt for the stadium, and would also be the time for stadium opponents to object to the county’s financing structure. It is unclear exactly how much the county will borrow, but commissioners have approved up to $397 million.
It is unclear if there will be a challenge.
Hankerson also told commissioners that crews moving gas lines at the Braves site will soon begin using dynamite to blast through underground rock to get deep enough to lay the new pipelines. The blasting will happen two days a week for 15 minutes each, Hankerson said.
And the county will begin interviewing eight firms who are vying to become the county’s representative on the Braves project. Hankerson said the firms will be narrowed to about three before negotiations begin. The county representative, also known as the Project Manager, will watch stadium construction on behalf of taxpayers.
