An impressive display of cool cars in Marietta this summer has led to the distribution of some needed cash for two metro Atlanta charities.
On Tuesday, members of the Creepers Car Club in Marietta presented donations totaling $22,000 to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation and Special Olympics Cobb County during the club’s monthly meeting in Kennesaw.
Each charity received $11,000.
“This is really what we’re about,” said Greg Grier, a Creepers member. “We enjoy our cars but we really enjoy giving back to the community. It’s something we’ve always done.”
The Marietta-based car club said the donations were raised through the Creepers’ Fun Run car show. The June event featured hundreds of classic cars and hot rods from all over the Southeast. It was held at Jim Miller Park in Marietta.
Sharon Robinson, the marketing director for the Children’s Health Care Atlanta Foundation says the donation will be put to good use.
“What these guys are doing will directly help families,” Robinson said. She said the money will be used for the Foundation’s family services effort. “What can I say? We just love them.”
Robinson said the money will make it possible for families to access chaplain services, school resources, child life specialists, and other services.
“There are so many things that insurance won’t pay for,” she said.
The other recipient of the car club’s generosity is Special Olympics/Cobb County.
“This is just unbelievable,” said Joe Bridgers, chairman of the group that provides year-round programs of training and competition for children and adults with special needs. “I know how hard these guys work to put on that show. And for them to give back to the community, that’s a wonderful thing.”
Bridgers said the donation also hits close to home as his daughter is a special needs adult.
“Every cent will go to help Special Olympians,” he said.
The club has donated $424,250 to charity since 1985.
