Catherine Buell was named president and CEO of the Atlanta Housing Authority on Thursday, succeeding longtime leader Joy Fitzgerald, who is retiring.
“I am proud of what we have accomplished as a team,” Fitzgerald said in a release, “and I will miss collaborating with AHA’s excellent staff on the important work of providing safe, affordable housing for Atlantans. I look forward to working with Catherine over the next few months to ensure a smooth transition.”
Fitzgerald has served at the authority for nearly 12 years as vice president of real estate development and CEO.
Prior to joining the housing group, Buell served as executive director of Washington, D.C.’s $2.5 billion St. Elizabeth’s East redevelopment project, one of the largest in the nation’s capitol.
Buell also led retail, office and mixed-income redevelopment projects in Washington, including overseeing the construction and operation of “Gateway D.C.,” a state-of-the-art park and pavilion.
“AHA is gifted with an incredible, highly skilled staff, and together we will play a leading role in providing affordable housing, educational and employment opportunities to thousands of Atlantans,” Buell said.
