A proposal to increase recycling fees almost 48 percent over the next two years for Atlanta homeowners is getting some scrutiny from the Atlanta City Council.

The council’s utilities committee is expected to consider June  13 a resolution by City Councilwoman Felicia Moore asking the Department of Public Works to consider other rate structures and investigate how other municipalities handle fees before hiking recycling costs.

The department is considering increasing recycling fees July 1 from the current $88 annually to $102 for a single family residence. That rate will rise to $116 on July 1, 2018 and to $130 on July 1, 2019.

Residents who earn less than $8,000 a year would be exempt from the fee.

“I introduced this bill because I think we should explore other options in our rate structure and compare how we collect for solid waste and recycling with other municipalities,” Moore said in a release. “We do not want to impose a future hardship on homeowners and commercial property owners.”

Other cities in metro Atlanta -- including Douglasville, Smyrna and Marietta -- charge a monthly fee for trash pickup and recycling, the City Council's office said.
