Researchers posed the question, “Are blondes really dumb?” The results have sparked discussion on social media.
The study, done at Ohio State University, looked at 10,878 American men and women and found that white women who said their natural hair color was blonde had an average IQ score within 3 points of brunettes and those with red or black hair.
The results for blonde white men were similar. They had IQs roughly equal to men with other hair colors.
The research also found that blonde women have a higher mean IQ and are more likely to be classified as geniuses and less like to have extremely low IQ than women with other hair colors.
While jokes about blondes may seem harmless to some, it can have real-world implications, said research scientist Jay Zagorsky, author of the study. “Research shows that stereotypes often have an impact on hiring, promotions and other social experiences,” Zagorsky said.
He says the results show compelling evidence against the dumb-blonde stereotype.
