The 45,000 online slots for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race were filled in less than five hours on Sunday.
Online registration for the July 4 race was set to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, but it wasn't exactly "On your mark, get set, go" for some participants, at least not at first.
A technical hitch in active.com’s registration system delayed some people's registration, said Dave Alberga, CEO of the Active Network.
“This is an event we plan for all year long and countless hours have gone into its design and execution," Alberga said. “I personally apologize for the issues athletes encountered during the first hour of registration. These issues were caused on Active's side, and not that of the AJC or the Atlanta Track Club.”
The issue was resolved quickly. By 5:30 p.m., all of the online slots were filled for the race.
The remaining 10,000 runners will be picked randomly from registration forms mailed in. Those paper registration forms will appear in the Sunday edition of the AJC on March 28.
For the first time, start-wave assignments will be performance-based, instead of randomly assigned. This will help ease congestion, officials said.
Also, participants will be given the opportunity to pick up their race numbers from the Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo at the AmericasMart. Pick-up will take place July 2 and 3. Those who wish to have their numbers mailed to them can select that option during registration. There will be a $5 postage and handling fee.
