A cat transformed into a dragon. A dog that looks like a bumblebee. Sound like cute Halloween costume ideas? A pet salon in Russia is taking it one step further by offering extreme makeovers that involve extensive fur dye jobs. The pet’s fur is also trimmed into shapes to resemble other animals or insects.

While the salon has started a popular trend in Russia, other pet lovers from around the world are sounding off with their concerns.

A representative for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told the Daily Mail that pets should not be dyed for cosmetic purposes, as ingredients in dye can be toxic to the skin and harmful when ingested as the pet grooms. Chemicals in dye could be potentially fatal, according to the representative.

However, the pet salon owner says that the dye is natural and safe, made from botanical ingredients that are designed to support a healthy coat.

Once applied, the dye stays on the fur for several months until the coat grows out.

The owner says that children in particular like seeing the colorful, fanciful pets.
