Not only is an 8-week-old kitten recovering after being left at a shelter with deep puncture wounds and purple-dyed fur, he's got a new best buddy who also started life out on the rough side.
The tiny animal was named “Smurf” by shelter workers who say he may have been used as bait or a chew toy for a fighting dog.
Now, barely a week later, Smurf acts like nothing ever happened, a veterinarian said in a follow-up report, and a big part of his quick rebound has to do with his best buddy, a 12-week-old blind kitten who was found in a garbage can, shivering and in pain, caretakers say. She has been named Wanda.
Wanda and Smurf were placed in the same cage and caretakers say “they adore each other.”
The two will be kept together at a foster home starting next week and then, hopefully, adopted together in a few months, according to the no-kill Nine Lives Foundation that is heading up their care.
