Geometric design is front and center in Judy Mozen’s and Randy Urquhart’s Roswell home. The stairway is wrapped around an octagon that serves as the heart of the multilevel home, topped with a glass skylight.
The unique house befits the couple who work in the remodeling and home building industry.
“The core of it is an octagon shape that’s the stairs. The rooms spin off the octagon,” said Mozen.
Snapshot
Residents: Judy Mozen and Randy Urquhart. Judy is president of Roswell-based Handcrafted Homes and 2015-2016 president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry; Randy is vice president of Handcrafted Homes.
Location: Roswell
Size: About 5,000 square feet, four bedrooms, four full and two half-baths
Year built/bought: 1986
Architectural style: Modern
Favorite architectural elements: The octagon shape and stairway, glass skylights, a niche in the kitchen, a fireplace with a black granite arch, and fixed glass in an art deco style in the living room.
Renovations: They've recently made changes to the dining room, with a built-in china cabinet by Handcrafted Homes, and kitchen, which has a custom LED fixture from Lighting Loft, Wood-Mode cabinets from Kitchensmith, Kenmore appliances and a Grohe faucet and is still undergoing changes. As a remodeler, Mozen admits sometimes it's hard to focus on their personal residence. "You have to say, 'I'm my client right now,'" she said.
Interior design style: Modern
Favorite interior design elements: The blend of modern furniture with heirlooms. Because she was the only girl born to her family in several generations, Mozen inherited many antiques, including a mahogany table and rosewood chairs. "When my grandmother died and my mother died, I went, 'Oh my gosh, this is beautiful in their homes, but how can I bring this in my home?" Mozen said. "I try to pick up some of the colors that are in the pieces of my mother's that are rosewood with pillows and fabrics and pieces of art."
Favorite outdoor elements: The circular stone patio with a waterfall, pond and garden near the front door. The stone steps feature a handrail in an artistic leaf and branch design.
Resources: Furniture from Modani and Havertys. Art and accessories from Raiford Gallery in Roswell. Carpet from Moda Floors & Interiors. Handmade pieces by Tom Mozen. Lighting by Lighting Loft and Masterpiece Lighting.
Decor tip: Sherwin-Williams' ColorSnap app helped Mozen select colors. In the kitchen, there's Sherwin-Williams' Koi Pond, Peppery and Sealskin. Sherwin-Williams' Pearl Gray in satin (main walls), custom peach (accent walls) and Benjamin Moore White Dove (trim) are in the living room, and Sherwin-Williams' Sand Beach (walls) and Stolen Kiss (ceiling) for the dining room.
