For the AJC

Pravin and Manju Kamdar moved from Wisconsin to live near their son Jinu, a trauma surgeon at WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. When they visited him in Atlanta, they enjoyed the warm weather and Kennesaw Mountain.

Manju, 75, talked about the new four-bedroom home with mountain views that she and Pravin, 76, bought in Woodstock’s Stoney Creek. The Cherokee County community by Ashton Woods has amenities including a pool, playground and dog park.

Q: Why did you decide to buy?

A: Our extended family lives in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, but our son lives here in Marietta. We wanted to be closer so he could come visit us and we could go to our grandchildren's school programs.

Q: What were your priorities?

A: We looked for three bedrooms, lots of light, a peaceful neighborhood and a big yard. I didn't want to be in the house all the time. Pravin wanted a two-story house with a basement. We found a two-story home with a basement, big trees that give us privacy, and a nice view of the mountains.

Q: How did you find this house?

A: When we started looking from Wisconsin, we found Susie (Trettel with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties) online, and that worked out well. She knew what I wanted and how much I wanted to spend. She helped us find this house when we visited for two months, and our son took care of the closing when we went back to Wisconsin.

Q: What do you like about the home?

A: In the family room, you don't need to turn on lamps because there is so much natural light. The kitchen, living room and family room feel like one big room, which is great for hosting family.

Q: What’s the lifestyle of the community?

A: Everyone is friendly and says hello. We like that the neighborhood is near the temple and that we can meet new people there.

Q: What advice do you have for senior buyers?

A: Look for good neighbors. When we were looking for homes, we met different people and talked to the agents. We didn't know anyone personally when we moved in here, but everyone was nice. As long as people are friendly, it works.
