Plastic tombstones, cobwebs and other Halloween decorations make some metro yards a bit more frightening this time of year. For homes on the market, from Cartersville to Dacula to Alpharetta, actual graves come with the property.
Real estate agents understand that having grave sites in a yard may spook some buyers. For this time of year, though, real estate agents gave Homefinder a “treat” — details and photos of these quirky outdoor features.
Location: Fulton County
The home at 10600 Victory Gate Drive in Alpharetta looks like an average suburban house with a deck and built-in grill. But the backyard also bears a historic monument from the 1800s and a couple of graves near the rear of the property, said agent Bessi Pegues with 4K Realty. The home, built in 1988 in the Bridgestone subdivision, is listed for $225,000.
Location: Gwinnett County
The previous owner of a Dacula home on 6 acres graveled and fenced in the cemetery behind the house. The 20 to 25 graves date to the mid 1800s and include those of Confederate soldiers, said Bret Muetzelfeld, an agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. The home at 926 Jordan Road in Gwinnett County, which includes about $300,000 of interior and exterior renovations, is listed for $599,900. The barn was saved and restored as well.
Location: Bartow County
A Cartersville home on a 1.9-acre lot also has grave sites from the Civil War, yet the home at 71 Sentry Drive (listed for $179,900 by Christine Topham with Re/Max Highlands Realty) is not alone. It’s a quarter-mile from another property, a renovated 185-year-old home on more than 30 acres, that has a cemetery with graves dating back to 1840. The graves include tombstones belonging to infants and other members of the Hargis family, the original owners of the home, which was built in 1838, said homeowner Diane Affolder. The property, at 215 Burnt Hickory Road in Cartersville and listed for $999,999 (by Kevin Affolder of Drake Realty), has modern updates such as a pool and pavilion, and granite countertops and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, plus a cabin by a 6-acre pond, seven indoor and two outdoor fireplaces, and even a wishing well.
