The old is becoming new in unique ways. Major retailers and Georgia-based businesses are creating furniture and accessories with style and a story.
You can find products that have been saved from landfills and reworked in interesting ways for nurseries, living rooms, porches, kitchens and other spaces in your home.
Here are five eye-catching items, from retailers and on display at the 2015 International Gift and Home Furnishings Market at AmericasMart Atlanta.
Wine barrel tables: Retired barrels and barrel parts from California vineyards are turned into tables, wine racks and other products by 2 Day Designs (2-daydesigns.com), based in the northeast Georgia town of Eastanollee. The pieces are made, sanded and hand-stained by Georgia craftsman. The company, which estimates that it has saved about 15,000 barrels from being destroyed, began providing tables and other small accents for the home from reclaimed lumber from the old Sears Catalogue Distribution Center in Atlanta. It also used teak from discarded railway ties to produce a line of products. Stores include the Mission Motif in Atlanta, Garrison's Furniture and Appliance in Canton, Appalachian Home Furnishings in Jasper and Mountain Top Furniture in Blairsville. A side table retails for an average $350.
Wine cork art: Reusing wine corks can be a craft project, such as for artwork or underneath glass on a tabletop. Kits include the peace sign wine cork kit from overstock.com, priced for $49.99. Designers and artisans on etsy.com also have wine cork products, such as a pin boards created by the Cork Art Co. (etsy.com/shop/TheCorkArtCo).
Wine bottle tree: Holes are drilled in old wooden columns to become spinning wine bottle trees by Atlanta's Matter Boutique (matterboutique.com), which creates and sells repurposed and repainted pieces.
Slab tables: Wood from magnolia, walnut and other trees are used for tables with unusual shapes. Metro area homeowners have used woodworking businesses such as Oneta Woodworks (onetawoodworks.com) in Athens for custom furniture using reclaimed millwork.
Reclaimed boat wood art: Your home may not have room for an entire boat, but multicolored strips of wood from boats in Bali are finding new purposes. One is RH Baby & Child's wall art made from weathered wood that is salvaged from boats. Small and rectangle options are available and each piece is different, according to the company. $199 for one, $549 for a set of three from rhbabyandchild.com.
