Jordan Schafer’s man cave condo in downtown Atlanta is full of shiny objects. The Atlanta Braves outfielder hand-picked the chrome furniture, flat screen TVs, pool table and other items.
“I’m pretty picky. I like things to be a specific way,” he said. “From the beginning, I kind of had an idea of what I wanted. I just looked around long enough and found pieces and put it together.”
While some teammates with families live in suburban Atlanta, Schafer chose city life and, in particular, the views from his high-rise condo in The Residences at W Atlanta – Downtown. He’s made the former sales center his home, down to a custom closet that even dedicates space to his hats and two flat screen TVs on the same wall in the living area.
“I’m big into fantasy football,” he said. “I don’t like switching the channel. It sounds kind of lazy. So I’ll put two games on at the same time or if my girl’s here then I can watch the game and she can watch her show and I’ll just mute the game, but at least I can still watch it.”
Snapshot
Resident: Jordan Schafer, 27, outfielder for the Atlanta Braves
Location: The Residences at W Atlanta – Downtown
Size: About 2,000 square feet, two bedrooms, one bath
Year built: 2010
Year bought: 2013
Architectural style: Contemporary
Favorite architectural elements: Walls of windows that offer views of Midtown, downtown Atlanta, Buckhead and beyond. “I walked in at night. It was unbelievable,” he said. “Right when you walk in the place, you basically walk down the hallway and see the entire city.”
Design consultants: Decorative artist Kathy Hynes
Interior design style: Contemporary
Favorite interior design features: The red croc faux-painted pillars, which have an interesting look and add a pop to the grays, black and cream color scheme in the condo. The condo also has custom-made furniture, including a banquette for the dining table and a padded suede and mirrored headboard (the headboard is from Huff Furniture & Design). “I like stuff that’s a little different,” he said. “I saw a headboard that had slots in it. I asked them if they could do it with mirrors.”
Favorite indulgences: Jerseys autographed by Hank Aaron, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan; two flat screen TVs in the living area, which are stacked atop each other; and the pool table. “It took me a while to find something black and something that was modern,” he said. “I accidentally kind of ran into it one day. I was on my way to another store and saw a billiards store. I was like, ‘I’ll stop and check it out,’ and luckily, they had one.”
Resources: Furniture from Huff Furniture & Design, By Design Furniture and Modani; closet system by Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios; Gagganeau kitchen appliances; Victoria + Albert tub; Kohler toilet; Dornbracht faucets; ALNO kitchen cabinetry.
Decor tip: Look on your own for furniture and build around those items. “Everyone has their different style,” he said. “I wouldn’t rely on somebody else to pick stuff out for you because half the time, half of the stuff you’re not going to like, and you don’t want to be mean, so you’d be like, ‘Oh yeah, that looks OK.’”
