Ever wondered what it would feel like to step inside Charles Dickens’ classic holiday tome, “A Christmas Carol?” To get a scowl from Scrooge, hobnob with ghosts and whoop it up at Fezziwig's Christmas bash?

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History invites guests to do just that at its “Dickens of a Christmas!” event. When visitors enter the museum, they’re immediately whisked into Scrooge’s world and taken on a guided tour of the story. An actor portrays Ebenezer Scrooge, London’s grouchiest Grinch. And guests tag along with him as he moves from scene to scene.

This marks the first time the museum has ever hosted an event like this. In order to make the transformation from working museum to old-school London, the facility closes its doors during regular hours each day of the event to prepare.

“We’re getting help from the community, theater professionals and some Kennesaw State University volunteers,” says special events manager Jane Pies.

Several vignettes will be presented featuring actors playing the parts of Dickens’ characters. Guests have a part in the action, too. Their unofficial role is that of virtual spirits with a bird’s eye view of Scrooge’s journey to the past, present and future.

Stops include Scrooge’s office, his bedroom, Bob Cratchit’s home and the cemetery. The museum’s Glover Machine Works exhibit hosts Fezziwig's party where musicians playing the hammer dulcimer and guitar perform Christmas music in a period style.

The tour culminates in a massive Christmas party in a 4,000 square-foot space lined with Christmas trees. Carolers croon as guests nosh on Christmas cookies and other goodies.

The whole experience promises something that stands apart from the typical retelling of the seasonal classic.

“The main thing that makes it different is that you’re not just sitting down watching a play,” says Pies. “You actually travel to the different venues with Scrooge.”
