Things to Do

Hey, why are some of Atlanta’s most iconic skyscrapers turning purple?

June 7, 2016
Rising tall on the horizon around the Perimeter Center, the King and Queen buildings are like distant lighthouses for drivers surfing the waves of traffic below.
In June, though, they’re turning into beacons of hope. Along with downtown Atlanta’s Centennial Tower, the pair of iconic high rises in the Concourse Office Park near where I-285 north meets Georgia 400 will turn their exterior lights purple throughout the month.
It’s all to raise awareness of June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. Purple is the signature color of the movement to defeat Alzheimer’s, which is now the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. The awareness month is aimed educating people about the disease, including knowing its 10 signs, as well as the how-to’s of maintaining brain health to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
Want to do your part beyond gawking at the towers? You can wear purple throughout the month and share photos on social media with the hashtag #ENDALZ. Additionally, June 20 is “The Longest Day,” sunrise-to-sunset event where people can raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association by participating in an activity of their choice for 16 hours.
