SUCCESS STORY / Vandie Enloe, 57: From 282 pounds to 170 pounds
Former weight: 282 pounds
Current weight: 170 pounds.
Pounds lost: 112
Height: 5 feet 8 inches
Age: 57
How long she's kept it off: "January 2012 I began," says Enloe. "My goal was to lose two pounds a week in 2012. It was close - I lost 100 pounds." In June she reached her current weight.
Personal life: "I am currently the family library coordinator on the Egleston campus for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta," she says. "I also volunteer for our animal assisted therapy program. I am the handler for Izzy, (a certified service dog) (www.choa.org/Support-Childrens/Volunteering/Hospital-Volunteers/Pet-Therapy/Izzy). She comes to work with me daily to visit with patients, families and staff and to provide targeted therapy to patients." She and her husband of 32 years live in Lilburn and have two children and one granddaughter.
Turning point: "I have struggled throughout my life with my weight," she says. "For many years I just could not get a grip on things. Although I knew what needed to be done, I did not do it. After having children, 26 years ago, I just slowly continued to gain weight until I was 282 pounds. I stayed there for many years, losing 20 to 30 pounds many times just to gain it back … Children's began offering Strong4Life (employee) programs and support just about the time that" my granddaughter "was born. It was all I could do to get to work each morning, do my job and get back home. It was time to do something" The program "includes nutritional counseling, exercise programs and support."
Diet plan: "Since I have a gluten and milk intolerance it seemed that Paleo fit my needs the best," she says. Breakfast is a green smoothie with protein powder or veggies and eggs or fish. Lunch and dinner are chicken, fish, or venison with veggies.
Exercise routine: "I exercise most weeks at least three times," she says. "I walk in my neighborhood, the (Camp Creek) Greenway Trail and Stone Mountain. I also do Kettle WorXs at home."
Biggest challenge: "Staying on track and getting back on track if I slip," she says.
How life has changed: "I have the energy to do the things I never thought I would be able to do. I sign up for 5Ks and they are actually fun," she says. "I make plans to meet friends to do fun things. I dance when I clean house. I am a crazy, fun grandmother that loves life … Stay focused and when you slip, don't stop believing in yourself … Everybody's journey is different, but knowledge shines a light on each path … Anyone on a wellness journey must find what works for them and it must be something that you will continue to do. It is not a goal that you reach and you are done."
