Chili sauce with a wine accent
Fire up dad’s grilled meat-and-vegetables dinner with a wine-accented chili sauce from Jojo’s Sriracha. Jolene Collins, a Brooklyn-based small-batch maker of chili sauces, has teamed with California’s Ravenswood Winery, incorporating its petite sirahs and zinfandels into a pair of chili sauces. We found a slight fruitiness in the Ravenswood Zinfandel Chili Sauce before the chilies kicked in, and a deeper earthiness in the Petite Sirah Chili Sauce until a serious fire hit our taste buds. A 6.4-ounce jar is $14. To buy: shop.ravenswoodwinery.com/sriracha.
Simply good breakfast burritos
Frozen burritos with good-for-you cred? Perhaps Good Food Made Simple’s trio of egg white burritos will fill the bill. A short microwave stop readies the flour tortilla packets. We enjoyed the chicken apple sausage’s balanced flavors, a not overly sweet nor salty 310-calorie mix that includes egg white bits, cheeses and potatoes. Same’s true of the Southwestern veggie that’s just spicy enough in its 240-calorie cheese, corn, bean and peppers combo. There’s also a garden veggies version now part of Good Food’s line of breakfast burritos. Suggested retail price: $1.59-$2.29 for a 5-ounce burrito. A store locator: goodfoodmadesimple.com.
Peanuts seasoned for summer
Add another level of interest to summer snacking with Planters Peanuts’ new flavors: salted caramel, smoked, chipotle and cocoa. Our two favorites: the smoky, spicy kick of the chipotle version and the slightly sweet peanuts dusted with cocoa. A 1-ounce serving of each (about 39 peanuts) weighs in at 160 calories. You’ll also get 6 to 7 grams of protein (depending on the flavor). Suggested retail price: $1.99 for a 6-ounce can. At supermarkets nationwide.
