What it is: "Amber ale" is usually code for one of the more boring styles on the craft landscape, amounting to a middle-of-the-road brownish ale with only slight distinguishing character. Though Rare Vos claims the catchall phrase on its label, this amber ale is one of the most dependable beers in Ommegang's well-regarded lineup. Inspired by "smooth, drinkable beers popular in Belgian cafes," Rare Vos is an easygoing, drinkable delight that's ideal for the encroaching fall weather.
Alcohol (by volume): 6.5 percent
In the bottle: Pouring a lovely copper color, Rare Vos is light on the tongue but supremely flavorful, mingling a web of orange, grass, hay, woodiness and spice that include a touch of clove. It is zesty, bright and a touch juicy, but with an impressively thin body. Calling a beer "thin" is often criticism, but for Rare Vos the thinness leads to accessibility. Beers this flavorful can often be boozy, syrupy and tough to stomach for more than a few sips. Rare Vos remains light and bright in its fruity spiciness, leading to an incredibly fun and versatile beer.
Drink it with: A rather faultless food beer, but particularly at home beside lighter meat such as roast pork or chicken.
Find it: Available in 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles at better beer stores.
