Brandi Mallory was a precocious 9-year-old, a regular on the pageant circuit when her weight started to creep up.

The more weight she put on the more she ate. Then her Sorority sister died of a massive heart attack.

She was 29 like Mallory. She was also overweight like Mallory, whose story last year won her a spot on season four of ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss.” The reality TV show puts seriously overweight participants like Mallory, who grew up in Stone Mountain, through a year that hopefully changes their approach to diet and exercise.

Unlike “The Biggest Loser,” “Extreme Weight Loss” is not a competition. Each episode follows the story of an obese person determined to lose weight. The drama lies in whether participants can rise to the challenge. Not all of them succeed.

Tune in at 8 p.m. Tuesday to see how Mallory’s story ends. Then come back to read her full story featured in Wednesday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
