Chamblee is seeking help with a new mural that will be installed at the new public safety building, according to an announcement posted Monday on the town’s official Facebook page.
An outdoor wall mural will be erected at 4445 Buford Hwy and the search for an artist is being carried out by the Chamblee Public Arts Commission.
“The Public Safety mural project seeks to bring beauty to what would otherwise be a cold, blank wall and also celebrate the energy and diversity of the local area,” the procurement notice said. “Given the wide range of potential visitors and diverse cultures of the residents that travel on Buford Hwy., the mural should celebrate the ‘coming together’ of all these diverse groups. The mural should highlight Chamblee’s rich cultural history while developing new expressions for the current times and enthusiasm about its future. This mural will transform this wall face into a vibrant, colorful and welcoming element to Chamblee.”
For the development of the mural, including supplies and equipment, engagement expense, design and artist commission, the city is allocating $26,000. The artist is responsible for their travel costs, however, and they must obtain personal liability insurance.
To be eligible for the project, artists must have completed exterior murals in public spaces and must create original work. Once the art is selected, a maintenance plan will be required. The effort isn’t limited to single artists, either; teams are allowed.
Artists should email submissions to llinman@chambleega.gov and they must be received by Feb. 1 at noon.
The Public Arts Commission will choose three to four artists on Feb. 5. Those artists will be given a $1,000 stipend to complete a detailed concept proposal by March 3, then, the concepts will be presented to the public for input. The Public Arts Commission, mayor and Chamblee City Council and chosen staff will decide the winner by March 17.
Weather permitting, the project installation will occur from mid-March to mid-May with completion by May 15.
