Many people woke up bright and early Wednesday to ensure they could purchase the latest drop from Telfar.
The unisex fashion label is known for regularly releasing new editions of their highly coveted handbags. They are also known for selling out soon after they’re released.
That’s exactly what happened when Twitter users raced to the website at 9 a.m. The black Telfar shopping bag had been restocked in small, medium and large. It apparently took minutes for all to sell out.

In no time, Twitter users — many of whom were Atlantans — shared their frustration with the process.
Some pointed to the spam-thwarting step as the culprit.

Telfar was established in Brooklyn, New York, in 2005 by queer Liberian-American fashion designer Telfar Clemens. The brand had what Clemens said was its “best year” in 2020, despite McKinsey projecting a 90% economic profit loss in the fashion industry, according to the New York Times.
The vegan leather shopping bag, which starts at $150, was chosen as one of Oprah Winfrey’s “favorite things.” “Insecure” star and creator Issa Rae had the mini version on her hit HBO series. It even got a shoutout from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on her Instagram Story. Other stars including Beyoncé, Solange, Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid and Azealia Banks have also been spotted with the totes.
Fashion shopping app Lyst released figures showing that Telfar was among 2020′s breakout brands. It said Telfar searches have seen a 270% increase week-on-week since August 2020. The bags’ demand led the brand to launch the Bag Security Program, which allowed shoppers to pre-order the bag in “any size, any color, any quantities,” the New York Post reported.
The bags are so hard to get, they’ve earned the nickname Bushwick Birkin, which also reflects where the brand is based.
