BBC News reported that the singer was recognized for his service in music and charity as part of Queen Elizabeth II's birthday honors list.

At the ceremony with Stewart was his wife, Penny Lancaster, and their children Alastair and Aiden.

The Associated Press reported that Stewart wore tartan pants in a nod to his own Scottish heritage.

Stewart said he spoke with Prince William about music.

"Prince William said, 'It's great that you're still going,' and I said, 'I have to - I've got eight children!'

"He congratulated me on my long career, and I said how happy this made me. I just wish my mom and dad had been here to see it."

Stewart met the Queen later that day during a reception at the Royal Academy of Arts.
