A variety show that became an entertainment icon for many U.S.-based Hispanics is bidding farewell after 53 years.
The last episode of “Sábado Gigante” airs Saturday on Univision, beginning at 8 p.m. E.T. (Check local listings for air times in your area.)
The farewell show will be packed with guest appearances, including Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony.
The Miami Herald reports that the show began in Chile in 1962. Univision then brought the show to the United States, where a new and loyal audience was formed.
Don Francisco, the beloved host of “Sábado Gigante,” was the driving force behind the show’s longtime success. Francisco, whose real name is Mario Kreutzberger, is proud of the show’s legacy.
He told the Miami Herald that he wanted to thank the audience who made the show such a hit.
