TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, Andrew Bird, and The Meat Puppets
FRIDAY, June 12
Steve Earle
Alt-country maverick Earle's new album, "Townes," pays tribute to the late Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. This show opens the Atlanta Botanical Garden's annual summer concert series.
8 p.m. June 12. $35. 1345 Piedmont Ave. N.E. 404-876-5859, www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org.
SATURDAY, June 13
TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear
Two of the most critically adored bands of the moment share the stage at the Tabernacle. Headlining is the experimental yet enthralling combo TV on the Radio, which twists indie rock into fascinating new shapes. Opener Grizzly Bear just released "Veckatimest," an album of lush beauty that will still be revealing treasures when it lands on best-of lists at year's end.
8 p.m. June 13. $26. The Tabernacle, 152 Luckie St. N.W. 404-659-9022, www.livenation.com.
X
The legendary quartet of Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake was as raw and punky as it got when it stormed into record stores in 1980 with "Los Angeles," but X also marked the spot where a touch of country first crept into punk. Cervenka recently revealed that she has multiple sclerosis, but she's not letting that stop her. "While this diagnosis will most certainly mean some changes for me, personally, it will not affect my commitments to the current X U.S. tour," she writes on her official Web site, "nor will it affect my solo album that is slated for release this fall on Bloodshot Records."
8:30 p.m. June 13. $25. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E. 404-521-1786, www.variety-playhouse.com.
MONDAY, June 15
Andrew Bird, Calexico
Violinist Bird has released a series of albums stuffed with instrumental inventiveness and melodic gems. In January, he followed 2007's gorgeous and critically revered "Armchair Apocrypha" with "Noble Beast." Calexico takes its name from a California border town that merges parts of the words California and Mexico. It's an apt moniker for a band that has absorbed so many influences, blending rootsy Americana with brassy mariachi sounds, French chansons and other exotic flavors.
8 p.m. June 15. $23.50-$33.50. Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway. 770-916-2800, www.cobbenergycentre.com.
TUESDAY, June 16
The Meat Puppets
This Phoenix-based group was one of Kurt Cobain's favorite bands, and Puppets frontman Curt Kirkwood joined Nirvana for three of his band's songs on the live "Unplugged in New York." In 2006, the estranged Meat Puppets reunited and hit the road. The trio has also released two albums of new material since the reunion, including this year's "Sewn Together."
8:30 p.m. June 16. $15. The EARL, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950, www.badearl.com.
