Although it’s been open only a few months, the Roswell Tap has the convivial feel of a neighborhood hangout — except the neighborhood could be somewhere in Buffalo, Chicago or Pittsburgh, rather than Roswell.
The cozy bar and grill atmosphere and a menu that features the likes of Anchor Bar-style Buffalo wings and a Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich are designed to give Northeastern and Midwestern refugees paroxysms of nostalgia.
The look: Pittsburgh native Sean McDonough and his partners took on a major project restoring a 100-year-old house on Alpharetta Street that had been gutted by fire. In the process, they added a second-story lounge and party room, along with a spacious second-story deck. The main floor has new lighting, seating and plenty of TVs tuned to sports.
The scene: Depending on the day and time, you're likely to find crowds of football fans, couples and families out for supper or Roswell workers at lunch. McDonough said lots of regulars walk over from Liberty Lofts across the street. And one regular, former Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, recently celebrated a birthday with friends while watching a Steelers game.
The menu: One of the menu highlights is a take on the famous Primanti Brothers Pittsburgh club sandwich ($9), stacked with meat, provolone cheese, fries, slaw and sliced tomato on Italian bread. Fresh dough New York-style pizza includes the meaty Tap Special ($16), loaded with beef, pork sausage, ground turkey and rosemary bacon. A favorite starter is Logan Turnpike grit chips ($7) served with chow chow or collard green and bacon dip.
The drinks: The signature specialty cocktail, the Tap Tea ($5), is a blend of distilled vodka, iced tea and lemonade in a frozen Mason jar. The 12-beer draft list leans to old school classics such as Budweiser, Miller and Yuengling ($3.50), plus Guinness ($5) and locals like Sweetwater and Terrapin ($4.50). There's a small wine list by the glass or bottle.
The extras: Look for a $2 draft beer special every day and menu specials such as house-made sausages and Chicago-style deep dish pizza.
