Anyone who remembers the Rose and Crown in Buckhead may be surprised to find a new place with the same name (but not the same owners) on Powers Ferry Road in Marietta. But while the old R and C was a faithful recreation of a British pub, this R and C is more of an all-American neighborhood tavern and sports bar.
The Menu
Among the long list of starters and sandwiches look for a hefty char-grilled 8-ounce burger on a Kaiser roll ($7.95). Entrees range from bangers and mash ($15.95) and shepherd’s pie ($14.95) to oven-roasted trout ($17.95) and a pan-seared New York strip steak ($19.95). The lunch portion of fish and chips ($8.95) with ultra-crunchy Guinness-battered cod is a good bet. On the the lighter side, there’s the Red Mesa salad with spicy blackened chicken and roasted corn and black bean salsa.
The Drinks
The tried-and-true beer menu features 14 draft offerings, and there's a short list of wines by the glass or bottle and a half-dozen specialty cocktails.
The Look
Most recently home to La Madeline, the sprawling space resembles an archeological dig, revealing layers of restaurants past. Somehow, though, the odd bits of Mexican tile, low ceiling with dark beams, and weathered mantle above a see-through fireplace converge to create a cozy aura. And the long curving bar is a particularly inviting spot to perch.
The Scene
Like most bar/ restaurants with long hours, the scene changes from businesslike at lunch to late night revelry. On a recent evening, the vibe was laid-back and convivial. Couples and families with children were scattered at tables around the dining room and out on the covered patio, while the bar was packed with singles and small groups having drinks and watching the Braves on TV.
The Extras
Rose and Crown hosts trivia on Tuesdays, karaoke on Thursdays, and live music on Fridays. A billiards table and several classic arcade games add to the fun.
