Has Chris Evans officially ended his role as Captain America? It appears so after the actor announces the end of filming “Avengers 4” via Twitter.

In the post, Evans said, "Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor."

Evans first picked up the shield of Steve Rogers in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger" and has portrayed Cap in multiple movies either as one of the leads in a ensemble team, like "The Avengers" films, a Captain America-centric film, like "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," or as a cameo, as in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Evans had spoken about not playing Captain America in the near future, People Magazine reported. In an article with the New York Times, Evans was quoted as saying "You want to get off the train before they push you off."

Spoiler alert: We know that Steve Rogers/Captain America survived Thanos' devastating snap of his fingers that wiped half of the world's population from the Earth, but we don't know how, or if, that snap will bring an end to Captain America's fight that started, in the film series' storyline, during World War II.

One thing that won't end is the connection the cast has developed over the past eight years. All but one of the core Avengers, Mark Ruffalo, got matching tattoos earlier this year, People Magazine reported.

We will have to wait and see what happens to Evans’ Rogers and his take on Captain America. Could the film franchise follow the comic books and have someone else take up the name, a character like Sebastian Stan’s “Bucky Barnes,” or  Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who both dissolved into dust at the end of “Infinity War.”

The answers will hopefully come when “Avengers 4” hits the big screen on May 3, 2019.
