On his first major single, "Southside," Lloyd sounds like he could be a guy at the Varsity answering the phone: "ATL Georgia, what'll I do for ya."
On one of the 22-year-old's more recent hits, "You," he plays a WSB news anchor John Pruitt of sorts — "reporting live from Atlanta, Georgia — Decatur where it's greater."
The guy is a one-man convention and visitors bureau, in music.
So with the release this week of his third CD, "Lessons In Love," of course the Vinings R&B singer was happy to reveal, Lloyd's Atlanta:
• For a big meal it's usually..."Strip in Atlantic Station. It's cool for the weekends, a nice date. Or if I want to take my mom away from the house — which is of course my favorite place to eat. Lloyd's kitchen. My mom and my aunts make crazy Cajun dishes: jambalaya, red beans and rice, gumbo, etouffee, merliton — which is like a squash dish. And sometimes I can convince my aunt to make banana pancakes."
• To dance that big meal off..."I like to go to Gotta Dance, which is the rehearsal hall that I choose to practice at. I go in there, put curtains up on all the windows, and I just get silly. I release a lot of energy there. Another type of dancing that I like to do is boxing, which I do with my friend [professional trainer] John Lewis over at Complex. I kick off my day, 7 o'clock, in the gym with him. And at nighttime if I feel up to it, it's Luckie Lounge on a Wednesday night with my girl Hannah [Kang] from Grand Hustle [Records]."
• His go-to place for jeans and sneakers..."Standard. Wish in Little Five Points ... And I like to go to Laced Up."
• But if he's shopping for others..."For my mom and aunts —they're really into music — I go to Barnes & Noble, and get them a really, really cool book about one of their favorite bands. And a CD or box set. Last Christmas I got my aunt the Beatles box set and she went crazy. My sister's spot is Cherry Bomb in Little Five Points. And for my brothers, well, the best place to go for them is Six Flags. They're not really into a lot of gifts. They like to do adventurous stuff, so we'll do that; or go to Lake Allatoona and I'll get us jet skis for the day."
• When the family's all together they..."Fight. Laugh. Love. Oh, you mean where do we go? Bowl. A lot. 300 Atlanta is a very nice place that we like to go. And they've got secret lanes in the back. Another place we like is right here, Atlantic Station, to the movies. Heavy."
• A guy's night out is typically spent..."Street surfing. Club-hopping. Drop-top driving. Looking for girls. If we want a girl that only wants us for our money, than we go to Buckhead. [Laughs] But if we want a girl that's really down for us, we go to Bankhead."
• On a first date, on the other hand..."I like to switch it up. Definitely the movies. The best place for me is a concert, where I don't really have to say much. We can just chill and be entertained. Chastain Park [Amphitheatre] is a really nice date place."
• And his favorite place to show off his new convertible BMW 650..."At my brothers' schools," said the oldest male of seven siblings. "Two brothers go to Salem [Middle School]. My other brother goes to MLK [High School]. I like to go pick them up after school: Kids are coming out of the halls. Buses are loading up. I pull up in the convertible and they jump in like a scene out of the movies, and we ride out with our crazy hair blowing in the wind. All the kids, they go crazy! I remember when I was in school, I always wished I had a big brother who would pick me up in his cool muscle car. Like his Mustang or something. And then all of the girls could say 'Man they're so cool'. So I like to be that big brother, for my brothers."
