Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy Houston, is not at all happy with a planned movie about her late daughter.
"Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family's objections," Houston said in a statement to "Entertainment Tonight." "No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby (Brown).
“In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please, please let her rest.”
Members of the late singer’s family actually starred in a short-lived Lifetime project of their own in 2012. Titled “The Houstons: On Our Own,” the show lasted one season.
Cissy is just the latest Houston to offer disparaging words regarding the new project, being helmed by Angela Bassett. The late Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, isn't too happy, either, and has let folks know via her busy Twitter feed. A more recent post suggests she may consider embracing a more circumspect approach to conflict, though.
“Today’s daily cookie fortune: ‘Don’t miss a chance to keep your mouth shut,’” she posted.
Bacchanal beckons
Michael C. Carlos Museum’s upcoming fall fundraiser, “Bacchanal 21: Farewell to the Flowers,” is planned for Sept. 20 at the museum, located on the Emory University campus. (Street address: 571 S. Kilgo Circle.)
“The ancient Aztecs celebrated Xochiquetzal, or ‘Goddess of the Flowering Earth,’ during the Farewell to the Flowers festival,” organizers explain. “They enjoyed a great feast, performed ritualistic dances, and inhaled the sweet scents of flowers that would soon wither away with the coming frost.”
A VIP pre-party with live music by Nathan Sexton on the Emory quad starts at 7 p.m., and dinner from 11 area caterers starts at 8 p.m. in the museum's reception hall. Chaired by Khalilah Birdsong and Keith Radford, the event features a "creative cocktail" dress code. Host committee tickets are $275 per couple or $150 each. Individual tickets are $50 for Emory students and museum members, $65 for Emory staff, alumni or faculty members and $75 for everyone else. Individual VIP tickets are $125. For reservations, call 404-727-2623 or see carlos.emory.edu/bacchanal.
