A gun-toting rapper who has been in and out of jail in connection with incidents involving guns is proclaiming that he has a soft spot for cattle and other furry creatures.
"I don't eat red meat," says Waka Flocka Flame, in a new video ad for the animal advocacy group PETA.
Flame, who's real name is Juaquin James Malphurs, poses mostly unclothed, bearing his tattoos and jewelry, while arguing against skinning animals. Says PETA: "underneath all that bling is a heart of gold—Waka Flocka Flame is a huge animal lover and is giving a shout-out to all the helpless fuzzy animals who are killed for their fur."
Malphurs, who grew up in Riverdale, has had his share of legal woes.
In January, he turned himself in to Henry County authorities on drug and weapons possession charges plus counts involving criminal street gang activity and a probation violation.
Last year in March, he was arrested in Houston County on a probation violation when he left Georgia for a concert despite a 2006 court order resulting from his guilty plea for possessing a sawed-off shotgun. Also that month, a man whom police said was a security guard for Malphurs was detained after a fight at the Walter's Clothing store in downtown Atlanta led to gunfire. No one was shot, but a witness said Malphurs got a swollen eye.
A couple months before that, Malphurs, who had a new mix tape entitled "Salute Me or Shoot Me, Vol. 2," was shot in the arm at the Bubble Bath Car Wash on Old National Highway. The shooting followed a scuffle that resulted when an armed man approached him demanding jewelry, police said at the time.
