An Atlanta celebrity is scheduled to appear before a Congressional committee Wednesday and guess what: He's not in trouble.
Pop star Usher is planning to give testimony (or maybe "Confession," Usher fans?) to the House Education and Labor Committee about his Atlanta-based New Look Foundation for youths.
The committee is looking at ways to expand and stress community service across the country. Also scheduled to appear are the managing editor of TIME magazine and leaders of several environmental activist groups.
New Look Foundation helps teach young people about the entertainment and sports industries. The foundation holds a two-week "Camp New Look" at Georgia Tech and also has a "Mogul in Training" program. It also helps place youths in internships with organizations such as the National Hockey League and the WNBA.
About 2,500 young people have gone through Usher's New Look Foundation since it was started in 1999, said foundation president Shawn Wilson.
Usher is "a little nervous" — but also excited about his first appearance before Congress, Wilson said shortly after landing in Washington on Tuesday.
"Sometimes you see celebrities appearing for reasons that aren't positive," he said. "So for him to be there and continue to be a role model ... this is an amazing opportunity."
