A new year means plenty of new shows and the return of few oldies but goodies. Your DVR will fill up fast with the returns of "Damages," "Nip/Tuck," "Scrubs" (on ABC now) and (finally!) "24."

But be wary of the newbies since most are throwaway reality shows such as "True Beauty" Monday, "13:Fear is Real" Wednesday and "Howie Do It" Friday. At least Tyler Perry fans will be thrilled to check out the debut of "Meet the Browns," a TV version of the movie and stage show on TBS Wednesday.

MONDAY

"The Bachelor" 8 p.m. ABC (season debut) — Jason Mesnick, the dull single dad Newnan's DeAnna Pappas rejected last year, is back to seek his real true love. Whatever.

"The Secret Life of the American Teenager" 8 p.m. ABC Family (season debut) — Amy marries sweet Ben but can't decide if she should keep the baby or put him or her up for adoption. She also finds out the baby's gender.

"Masters of Illusion" 9 p.m. MyAtl (new series) — Check out the future David Copperfields of the world.

"True Beauty" 10 p.m. ABC (new series) — Contestants think they're competing to be the most beautiful person on the outside but Ashton Kutcher & Co. have a twist: they are being judged on inner beauty. ABC provided a few amusing clips but not an entire episode in advance. Clearly, they found as many insanely self-centered, egotistical beauties as possible to ensure good entertainment.

TUESDAY

• "Homeland Security USA" 8 p.m. ABC (new series) — This series chronicles a range of security-related incidents, from an airport to the border patrol to a mail center. It's the type of show you'd more likely see on Discovery or Tru TV.

"The Biggest Loser: Couples" 8 p.m. NBC (season debut) — Competitors include the heaviest female ever (379 pounds) and the oldest (63 year old grandparents.).

"Scrubs" 9 p.m. ABC (season debut) — ABC swooped in after NBC dumped this cult show with 18 more episodes. Courteney Cox guest stars as the new hospital head. She's more amusing here than on the cancelled FX show "Dirt."

"Nip/Tuck" 10 p.m. NET (season debut) — Sean recovers from Colleen's attack.

"10 Items or Less" 11 p.m. TBS (season debut)— Kim Coles becomes the new Super Value Mart manager. She's not nearly as funny as her predecessor, at least in the first episode.

WEDNESDAY

"13: Fear is Real" 8 p.m. the CW (new series) — 13 contestants vie to win (a relatively measly but evil-sounding) $66,666 with scary challenges such as being buried alive.

"35th Annual People's Choice Awards" 9 p.m. CBS — Why is "new TV comedy" even a category when it includes "Kim & Kath"?

"Damages" 10 p.m. FX (season debut) — This complex drama has added William Hurt while Ted Danson's Frobisher survives the gunshot wound at the end of last season.

"Man v. Food" 10 p.m. Travel — Adam Richman travels to Atlanta for food challenges.

"Meet the Browns" 10 p.m. TBS (new series) — Check out Leroy Brown (David Mann) in small screen form.

THURSDAY

"Grey's Anatomy" 9 p.m. ABC — Seattle Grace admits a death row inmate, causing dissension between Cristina and Meredith. And that Denny ghost is still tormenting Izzie — as well as the viewers.

"14th Annual Critics Choice Awards" 9 p.m. VH1 — Check out to see if films such as "Doubt," "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire" can gain more Oscar Buzz with victories here.

"30 Rock" 9:30 p.m. NBC — Jack has the hots for his mom's nurse, who happens to be played by Salma Hayek.

"Private Practice" 10:01 p.m. ABC — By moving this "Grey's" spinoff after "Grey's," ABC hopes to pump some life into this drama. There's a quarantine at the wellness center after a patient gets the measles.

FRIDAY

"Howie Do It" 8 p.m. NBC (new series) — Because we don't get enough of Howie Mandel on "Deal or No Deal," he's now doing a prank show.

"Flashpoint" 9 p.m. CBS (season debut) — A surprise hit over the summer, this Canadian cop drama returns to CBS, where it fits perfectly in the mix.

"Lipstick Jungle" 9 p.m. NBC (series finale) — This attempt to replicate "Sex & the City" never quite caught on. Sorry, Brooke. Try again!

"Monk" 9 p.m. USA — This reliable hit returns for another seven episodes. Monk's half-brother convinces him to help figure out how he was supposedly framed for murder. A fresh "Psych" follows at 10 p.m.

"Stargate Atlantis" 9 p.m. SciFi (series finale) — Bid farewell to one of SciFi's workhorses as the team considers attacking a vessel threatening Earth.

WEEKEND

• "Game Show In My Head" 8 p.m. Saturday CBS — The first contestant last week managed to convincingly charm unsuspecting people into doing silly things. And he won $40,000!

"Expecting a Miracle" 9 p.m. Saturday Hallmark — Teri Polo ("Meet the Parents") and Jason Priestley ("90210") head for a vacation to Mexico and meet Cheech Marin.

"My Big Redneck Wedding" 9 p.m. Saturday CMT (season debut) — Host Tom Arnold gets a paycheck!

"24" 8-10 p.m. Sunday FOX (season debut) — Jack Bauer opens in the Senate hotseat but he'll be back in action quickly. These first two hours feature mostly boring new characters and a surprise return of a Bauer ally. Wait for next week for the big plot twist.

"Golden Globes Awards" 8 p.m. Sunday NBC — After last year's non show due to the writers' strike, the stars get to dress up and drink again this year. No clear favorites in most major categories, but this should give folks a sense how the Oscars might go.
