Black-tie buzz

Atlanta's philanthropic set has been out in full force. Here's a recap of some recent fetes.

The 20th annual Hope Fashion Show benefiting the American Cancer Society was held March 14 at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. Chaired by Lori Landis and Susan Canoll, the event honored survivor and ACS Colleen Maloney (who happened to be celebrating a birthday that day) and featured a Belk fashion show with a number of survivors serving as models. There were few dry eyes in the room after keynote speaker Marcy Scott's remarks. "What all this has taught me is you're stronger than you thought," said Scott, diagnosed at 37. "I stand here today, 15 months cancer free."

The Heart Ball, held March 12 at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, honored Dr. Nanette K. Wenger, a professor of medicine in the division of cardiology at the Emory University School of Medicine. Chaired by Don and Tess Fancher and supported by signature sponsor CardioMEMS, the event raised $760,000 and more than 425 attended. Among the evening's highlights was a touching, humorous video starring Wenger's adorable grandchildren.

More than 350 guests attended the Atlanta Ballet Ball, held Feb. 19 at the Piedmont Driving Club. Angelle Hamilton and Carol Gendell chaired the event, assisted by a committee that included Joanne Chesler Gross, Mary Frances Garrett, Pat King and Timothy Tew. The evening featured performances by students from schools that participate in Atlanta Ballet outreach programs: College Park and Park Lane elementary schools, the Latin American Association and City of Refuge, and honored Atlanta Ballet trustee Patti Wallace. Her support has meant the return of live music to ballet performances.
