Johnny Depp voted America's favorite actor
Playing a drunken pirate is paying big dividends for Johnny Depp, who has been voted America's favorite movie star for the second year in a row.
The actor who portrays Capt. Jack Sparrow in the four "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, and had starring roles in "Edward Scissorhands," "Finding Neverland" and "The Tourist," beat out Denzel Washington and Clint Eastwood, who tied for No. 2, in a nationwide Harris Poll released Thursday.
Depp's popularity is lucrative. According to Forbes, he was the third-highest-earning actor in 2011, grossing an estimated $1 billion and trailing only Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) at $1.3 billion and Shia LaBeouf at $1.1 billion.
The list of Top 10 stars was dominated by male actors. Sandra Bullock, at no. 7, was the only woman on the list. One actor in the Top 10 has been dead for more than 30 years: the American icon John Wayne, who was voted no. 5.
Depp is one of several actors to win the survey twice. Eastwood was named most popular in 1994, 1997, 2006 and 2009; Washington in 2006-2008; Tom Hanks in 2002, 2004 and 2005; and Harrison Ford in 1998-2000.
Results of the latest Harris poll, which surveyed 2,237 adults between Dec. 5 and 12:
1. Johnny Depp
2. Denzel Washington and Clint Eastwood
4. Tom Hanks
5. John Wayne
6. George Clooney
7. Sandra Bullock
8. Harrison Ford
