Turtle Tours at Heritage Sandy Springs Museum

Kids get a tot’s-eye view of this museum with a customized tour just for young ones. Children ages 2 through 5 and their parents receive a 30-minute guided visit courtesy of museum mascots Sandy the Chipmunk and Spring the Turtle. The tours, which are based on the Smithsonian Institution’s Early Enrichment program, include hands-on exhibits, crafts and stories. Learn about Sandy Springs’ original Native American inhabitants, life during the Civil War and more. The “Heroes of Sandy Springs” exhibit, which opened last August, explores the history of policing and firefighting in the area.

42nd Annual Atlanta Model Train and Railroadiana Show and Sale at North Atlanta Trade Center

Train lovers can blow their collective whistles at this celebration of all things choo-choo. The folks behind Golden Spike Enterprises Inc. play host to this yearly event. Dealers spread their wares across more than 300 tables featuring model train items and accessories, as well as railroad antiques. Looking for an old-school Lionel train set or perhaps something fresh out of the box? It’s all here. Railroad buffs can even score actual train memorabilia, including dining car china, lanterns, timetables, switch locks and loads of other goodies. Guests can take a gander at several sprawling layouts in action.

CUMMING

Firecracker Jazz Band at the Cumming Playhouse

It’s a virtual romp in the Big Easy as the Firecracker Jazz Band offers Dixieland and New Orleans-style jazz. If you prefer your jelly rolls of the Morton variety, this group has the goods. Members of the band carry serious cred, ranging from Bill Haley's Comets, Squirrel Nut Zippers and the Tommy Dorsey Band to backing the likes of Barbra Streisand, Sammy Davis Jr. and Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Seeing seasoned pros play in an intimate venue such as this is certainly a plus.
