Sorry Veronica and Betty, you’re going to strike out with Riverdale High’s newest student.

Kevin Keller, the latest character to join the Archie Comics’ series, is gay.

Archie Comics announced the new character on its website Thursday, saying bringing in an openly gay character is "just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive."

“It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,” Archie Comics co-chief executive Jon Goldwater said on the website.

Keller joins Riverdale High on Sept. 1 in the full-issue story “Isn’t it Bromantic?”

In the story, Keller strolls into town and beats Jughead in a burger-eating contest at Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe. Well, after that, Veronica latches onto Kevin, who tries to let her down easy.

Apparently, it takes a while for Veronica to get the message, as her flirtations become increasingly persistent, according to a plot summary.

"Isn't it Bromantic," hits comic shops on Sept. 1 and newsstands on Sept. 14, but Archie Comics has a sneak peek for those who can't wait until then.
