Cate Blanchett, starring in a new film that is a love story between two women in 1950s' New york, was asked by Variety magazine  if the film was "her first turn as a lesbian" and she surprised the interviewer with her answer.

“‘On film — or in real life?’ she asks coyly. Pressed for details about whether she’s had past relationships with women, she responds: ‘Yes. Many times,’ but doesn’t elaborate.”

The movie is "Carol" and stars Blanchette as an older woman who enters into a passionate love affair with a younger woman played by Rooney Mara. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel, "The Price of Salt."

Blanchett told Variety it took 11 years for “Carol” to be made. The movie is now in the running for the Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Blanchett, who turns 46 on May 14, has been married for 18 years. She and her husband recently adopted a daughter.
