Friday night at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta, the crowd will be singing, shouting, spilling into the aisles, and even throwing stuff.
If you think that sounds like a rowdy rock show, think again.
The mostly middle-aged female audience will be reacting to scenes up on the big screen, while singing along to the songs in the movie “Mamma Mia!” -- the romantic comedy about a bride-to-be set to the kitschy hits of ’70s Swedish pop group ABBA.
“It’s very similar to ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show,’ in that people bring props,” said the Strand’s director of marketing, Christy Rosell. “They bring Monopoly money and they throw it up in the air during the number ‘Money, Money, Money.’ They’re dressed up, and dancing and singing, of course.”
A historic 1935 movie palace on Marietta Square, the Strand was restored and reopened in late 2008. Since then, it’s been home to the Atlanta Lyric Theatre and has played host to all kinds of concerts and film series.
But singalongs have become a mainstay. And “Mamma Mia!” has proved wildly popular, fueled by a winning combination of nostalgia and catchy tunes, such as “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me” and “SOS.”
“It’s mainly women,” Rosell said. “But the age range starts at around 20 and goes up to senior citizens. It’s usually a sold-out show and everyone really gets into the party spirit of the movie.”
Going in a different direction, on Nov. 26 the Strand will present a singalong to the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The Sound of Music.”
“We’ll be doing that one for the first time and it will be aimed at children and families,” Rosell said. “Musical theater fanatics should enjoy it, too. It’s the day after Thanksgiving, so we wanted to try something families could do together.”
Other upcoming events at the Strand include the Atlanta Lyric Theatre production of “42nd Street,” running Dec. 3-19. And on New Year’s Eve the Strand celebrates with singer and Marietta native Billy Joe Royal.
