During a two-year stay in London, Cathy Schultz embraced being able to walk to shops and restaurants from her home. When she and her husband Randy moved back to metro Atlanta, the couple found a three-story townhome in historic Roswell with the same access to shopping and dining.

The new development allowed them to customize the space, including knocking down a wall to turn the four-bedroom plan into a three-bedroom townhome. They downsized from a 6,000-square-foot home to a townhome nearly half the size.

By using existing furniture and incorporating new furniture, window treatments, accessories and items from their time in London and other travels, the interiors matched their more modern aesthetic, in a historic setting.

Residents: Randy and Cathy Schultz. Randy is an executive vice president for Cadence Bank; Cathy is a former event photographer

Location: Providence in Historic Roswell

Size: About 2,800 square feet, three bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths

Year built: 2010

Year bought: 2010

Builder: Lehigh Homes

Architect: Arie Kohn Architects, based in Roswell

Architectural style: Brownstone

Interior design style: “Modern comfortable,” as described by Cathy. During their travels, the couple stayed in boutique hotels, and Cathy wanted to incorporate the clean, clutter-free look of those properties. The use of varying fabric textures and pops of color, such as orange and blue, in a neutral background helped create the setting Cathy was seeking.

Design consultant: Kerry Howard of Atlanta-based KMH Interiors

Favorite interior design features: A vintage-looking Brutozoni stove in cream makes a statement in the kitchen. “It’s my crowning glory in my kitchen,” Cathy said. The kitchen countertops are a black recycled granite composite, and the boomerang-shaped bar top is custom-made out of zebrawood.

Favorite furniture: The circular dining room table, which is made of mahogany. “I’ve always loved a circular table because I think when you have a dinner party it’s a lot more fun, and you feel connected with your guests,” Cathy said.

Favorite art galleries: Raiford Gallery, and Muse & Co., both in Roswell

Landscape designer: Charles Hodges Ltd. Gardens, based in Marietta

Favorite outdoor feature: The courtyard, which has unique features such as an Indian cooking pot that serves as a fire pit. In the summer, they add a top, converting the fire pit to a table. The circular staircase from the kitchen to the courtyard was an idea borrowed from their lake house at Lake Lanier, which also has a circular staircase. “There is not a lot of space, so you have to be creative with your space,” Cathy said. Seating in the courtyard is from Restoration Hardware.

Design tip: Howard took a photo of a magnolia, taken by Cathy, blew it up to several times its original size and divided it into three panels to create a dramatic effect in the living room. “He said, ‘You need to do something personal. You need to come up with a piece to put on the walls,’” Cathy said.
