Private Quarters: A custom makeover in Sagamore Hills. The Shevlins

Murray and Michelle Shevlin bought their 3,000-square-foot Sagamore Hills home in 2010 after looking with their designers for inspiration for what could done to create their dream home.

An antique Empire cabinet decorates the foyer. The foyer allows traffic to flow into the living room, family room and kitchen area or upstairs to the family bedrooms.

Murray and Michelle Shevlin came up with the idea to create an antique suitcase end table. One of the suitcases belonged to Murray's father.

While they were not in the original design, built-in bookshelves were added during the 2010 renovation.

The wood-burning fireplace was part of the original design of the home. The newly added slats gives it an updated twist.

Nathan Shevlin, five weeks, sleeps in his new bedroom. His sisters, Rose and Ella, made the "Welcome Home" banner for him.

"The old master bath was just too small to support the amenities of a contemporary master bath, but it was the perfect size for the new master closet," says Jim Walker, owner of Copper Sky Renovations. "We had to open two existing closets to create the space for the new bathroom."

A painting of Pete the Cat by Georgia artist James Dean adorns the living room. The Shevlins designed each room with their children in mind.

"I'm particularly proud of the screened-in porch we added to expand the living space outdoors and create a seamless flow into the rest of the house for entertaining. We reused the mahogany wood paneling that was removed from the old den and installed it in the ceiling of the new porch," says Jim Walker, owner of Copper Sky Renovations.

White marble surrounds the fireplace. The painting above the mantle was purchased in Piazza Novella during a family vacation to Rome, Italy.

The hunt board and dining room table were designed by Dannette Sperry, co-owner of Primitive Folks, a folk art studio in Maysville. "The hunt boards were once used by hunters who were dirty from being on their horses all day or from walking in the fields and didn't want to go inside their homes and sit at the formal table," says Murray Shevlin. "They stood over the hunt board and ate their meal before skinning and cleaning their game."

Jim Walker, owner of Copper Sky Renovations, helped in the design and remodel of Murray and Michelle Shevlin's home. The built-in breakfast area was constructed to accommodate the family of five during many of their meals. The table is situated where the old patio door once stood.

White Delicatus granite was added to create the counter for an eating area that the family uses regularly. The range was reused from the old home, but an updated modern hood system was installed in the remodeled kitchen.

During the 2010 remodel of the Shevlin's home, new maple cabinets, granite countertops and wood floors were added to the larger kitchen.
