Fania, the record label that is home to some of the biggest names in Latin music, is bringing Salsa to the South.
On Tuesday, Fania Group announced in conjunction with World Dance Group, it will present the 5th annual World Salsa Championships from Dec. 7 - 11 in Atlanta.
The competition, which takes place in the Atrium Ballroom at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel, has been to Atlanta in the past, but this year, the addition of new events and music curated by Fania, promises to offer a more dynamic experience to competitors and attendees.
“Fania Records was the label responsible for creating the musical genre known as Salsa,” said Michael Rucker, CMO for Fania/Codigo Group in a statement. “This music was not just a genre but a style of dance as well and today we are proud to present to our fans the best Salsa dancers in the world.”
Fania brought performers like Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe, Celia Cruz and the Fania All Stars to the record-buying masses. Today, with a roster of new artists, the company remains a purveyor of dance music.
The salsa competition features dancers from around the world who will compete in Salsa On-1 or LA Style salsa, Salsa On-2 also known as Mambo, Cabaret which allows tricks and lifts, Teams featuring six or more dancers and a fifth category of same gender dancers.
Twelve judges will preside over the event, which also features dance workshops and after parties highlighting DJs from around the country including Atlanta's hottest Salsa DJs Mike Arana, DJ King Tito and DJ Fabian.
