Atlanta native Sallie Patrick grew up a "Dynasty" fan, loving the soap genre.
So thanks to a bit of kismet (and some nifty Georgia tax credits), a revival of the show three decades later is not only based and set in Atlanta but run by Patrick, a woman who knows the city well.
The Atlanta touches are evident in its first season. (The show returns tonight at 9 p.m. after a holiday break.) When a prisoner meets Fallon Carrington (Elizabeth Gillies), he calls her a "Buckhead Betty." Steven Carrington's drug buddy lands in the Fulton County jail. Former Atlanta Falcon Jamal Anderson and UGA Bulldog alum Hines Ward pop in for a friendly Carrington Thanksgiving football scrimmage.
Patrick graduated from Westminster Schools where she learned she found her writing voice, which featured a knack for dialogue and creating characters.
She said a pure soap like “Dynasty” — without a high concept like a haunted town or set in a particular venue like a prison or hospital — “is a real rarity on prime time these days. It also means the show can switch directions, characters and tone from season to season more freely than a show with more defined parameters. And that’s exciting!”
