Bill Celler, who has been with country station Kicks 101.5 since the mid-1980s, yesterday told listeners he was leaving his on-air disc jockey position for a management job.
His boss Paul O'Malley told me this morning that Celler will be overseeing the Kicks and True Oldies Web sites.
Tim Michaels, who had been doing nights for Kicks the past year, will take over the 3 to 7 p.m. slot starting today.
“This gives Bill a chance to expand his career into a growing area,” O’Malley said. “He’ll be doing updates on air about our digital content. You’ll still hear his voice daily on Kicks.”
Rhubarb Jones, who was morning host at sister country station Eagle before Citadel turned it into an oldies station in early 2008, said Celler on air always sounded like "a trusted friend."
“I’m shocked they’d take him off the air,” said Jones, who now teaches media management at Kennesaw State University. “He didn’t have a lot of flash but you could listen to him on the air and not worry about turning the radio up or down when he was doing a voice break.”
But he also knew Celler to be a computer specialist so this move does marry his skills with his interests.
Steve Mitchell, another long-time jock at Eagle, echoed Rhubarb's sentiments. "He's a trooper," said Mitchell, who does voice-over and production work. "Kudos to him. He's a dying breed, someone who has stayed at the same station for more than 20 years. He was a good, solid, by-the-numbers jock. He delivered a well-rounded show every day. He wasn't hilarious but he was entertaining."
