Clark Howard takes a pie in the face for a good cause
2:21 pm December 16, 2009, by
This is from my colleague Jen Brett of Peach Buzz fame:Have you ever been hit in the face with a pie?" Clark Howard asked as he called Wednesday morning. "I don't recommend it."
But by allowing fans the opportunity to smack him with flying pies, Howard was able to raise more than $6,000 for his holiday charity, Clark’s Christmas Kids. People had their choice of slinging chocolate cream, banana cream or lemon meringue at the affable cheapskate. Turns out the lemon sort of stings.
“The thing I learned is you have to wear protective eyewear,” Howard mused.
The temporary irritation was for a good cause. His charity provides gifts to children in foster care.
“I just love making it possible for a child who might otherwise get nothing on Christmas morning,” Howard said. “To let them know than an absolute stranger cares about them is great. That gift will mean more to that child than any gift my children get from me.”
This is the 19th year of Clark's Christmas Kids, so naturally we asked what fans might be able to hurl at Howard next year. He groaned at the idea that getting walloped by desserts for charity might become a trend.
“I hope not!” he said.
Howard, a syndicated talk show host, is heard locally weekdays on WSB-AM from 1 to 4 p.m. and seen on HLN on the weekends. He also does reports on occasion for WSB-TV.
