The romantic drama created by Queen Latifah's production company features three upscale local women who deal with relationships in different ways. It was VH1's first scripted drama launched in 2011.
Though "Single Ladies" pulled in respectable numbers for the network, it saw a marked dropoff as season three went on, which may have led to its surprise cancellation. Then again, its overall viewership of 2.2 million per week wasn't all that different from season two, despite a yawning 16-month gap between seasons.
There was behind-the-scenes drama on the show, too. The show's biggest name Stacey Dash quit after season one, with rumors of on-set tensions. After season two. creator Stacy Littlejohn left without explanation, forcing the show to go without its primary creative voice season three.
For Centric, which has been around since 2009, this would be a major investment in original drama, something it has not focused on to date. I have not heard word about any cast changes or how this might affect the show's budget. I'll update this as I do.
"We are thrilled to be working once again with Flavor Unit Entertainment and Queen Latifah. She does it all and we are happy to have her join us as a creative force as we continue to grow Centric into a premiere destination for African-American women. We couldn't be more excited about what's ahead," BET Networks chairman and CEO Debra L. Lee said in a press release.
Centric doesn't have the reach of VH1. It is typically on a second tier of cable stations that requires extra payment over basic cable, where VH1 usually presides.
"Single Ladies" joins shows such as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Cougar Town," "Scrubs" and "The Game" which changed networks mid-run.
On the day of the announcement Tuesday, none of the three major stars - Charity Shea, Denise Vasi and LisaRaye McCoy-Misick - made a comment about the good news on Twitter.
