Is the Never Trump movement a done deal? Maybe not.
It’s too late for Donald Trump's opponents to block him from the nomination, but Fox News reported on a movement afoot to deny him and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton the 270 electoral votes they need to win the presidency in November.
The latest plan hatched by Trump opponents involves a "None of the Above" campaign in states where both Trump and Clinton struggled, Fox reported. (Think: Kansas, Minnesota, Utah) If successful, the third-party bid would throw the race to the U.S. House.
Georgia Republican honcho Randy Evans, who tweeted out the story, said on the newscast that it might not be as far-fetched as it sounds.
“When I looked at the deadlines for the states, and then when I looked at the polling data in terms of the number of people who were not satisfied with either one of the nominees, I realized this is not a cockamamie plan,” said Evans, a Republican National Committee member. “This could work if it has the right amount of funding.”
Clinton and Trump both handily won Georgia, but both also struggle with a giant enthusiasm gap. An AJC poll showed that half of their supporters say they are backing them purely out of spite for their opponent.
Meanwhile, Georgia radio firebrand Erick Erickson, one of the most vocal critics of Trump, has continued to raise the specter of a third-party challenge to the billionaire. And he mocked Republicans who back Trump purely because they fear Clinton. (Erickson shares the same corporate overlords as your AJC correspondents.)
More and more Republicans on a daily basis surrender their credibility and integrity to justify their support of Donald Trump.
