Crossover Day is here and with it plenty of fast talking and maneuvering from lawmakers (and lobbyists) eager to keep their bills alive.

Casino gambling legislation made a surprise return late last week and nearly made it to the House floor before Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, intervened. He instructed house members to go home, go to church and talk to constituents over the weekend. The outcome is far from certain but supporters and opponents also planned to spend the weekend gathering support.

The Senate will take up bills that would reduce state income taxes, limit lifetime welfare benefits, regulate fantasy sports, and expand ever so slightly the reach of the state’s medical marijuana law.

Both chambers start at 10 a.m. and lawmakers will probably work well into the night.
